REBOOT is a lunchtime program specifically aimed at upper primary school students which introduces them to evidence-based wellbeing principles in a fun and engaging way.
The five wellbeing principles are derived from the five Life Domains known to influence wellbeing. These include Self-esteem, Perceived Control, Optimism/Hope, Achievement in life and Personal Relationships (International Wellbeing Group, 2013). Information around these domains is delivered in broad strokes through fun games, talks and activities.
According to the Australian Unity Wellbeing Report, “Research from around the world, including extensive research conducted by Deakin University as part of the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index, shows that wellbeing matters a lot—for individuals, communities and the nation.” (pg. 15 ... download the report using the button below)
Volunteers from the community building relationships with children is a key focus of the REBOOT program. We know that “Relationships provide the emotional scaffolding to our lives” (Australian Unity, 2021, p. 24). In response, REBOOT can become a part of that structure for both children and schools that facilitates great connections amongst all involved. There’s nothing like seeing a child’s face light up when they are welcomed by name and knowing that there are other significant adults who care.
Getting involved as a volunteer is good for the wellbeing of those helping out (Mellor, D et. al 2008). Therefore, a key focus of the REBOOT program is the involvement of trained community volunteers.
PICTURE THIS….. The lunchtime bell goes, and the kids run into a room set aside, especially for the REBOOT program. They’re greeted at the door & welcomed in. The kids can move amongst any of the activity areas which may include games, crafts, etc. Each area has a REBOOT leader sitting there, waiting to chat with them. Then it’s REBOOT TIME! This is where the evidence-based wellbeing principles are introduced in a fun and engaging way.
The team at Youth Dimension will provide training, support, and resources to help you run the REBOOT program in your local school.
